Whose Heights is it Anyway?

The Story May Change, but the Micro Aggressions Stay the Same

Many Afro Latinos called out In the Heights for its exclusion, but it was The Root who led the charge in holding production’s feet to the flames. New York raised Afro Cuban, and Root writer Felice León gave an extensive video interview and article (check out both here), challenging cast members and production heads Lin Manuel Miranda and John M. Chu.

Rita, Por Favor

On a recent episode of The Late Show with Steven Colbert, actor and friend of Miranda, Rita Morena, defended the director’s work, wondering why Afro Latinos and other critics, “Just wait and leave it alone?” The suggestion is a nod to the “We’ll all get a turn” narrative that many Black people and people of color face when demanding representation. The truth is that the wait has been long enough. Know one should understand that more than Rita Moreno.
